Georgiana Darcy’s Diary

The full title of this novel is Georgiana Darcy’s Diary: Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice continued (Pride and Prejudice Chronicles Book 1). Whew! The author is Anna Elliott.

As it says on the tin, it is the diary of Georgiana Darcy, the younger sister of Mr. Darcy. It starts a year after the marriage of Darcy and Lizzie.  I liked the novel and thought the author handled the format well, it’s not always easy to make a novel readable in diary form.

There aren’t that many novels in this genre that are written as diaries. The one that immediately springs to mind is Bridget Jones’ Diary but that is an entirely different kettle of fish from Georgiana Darcy’s Diary. Another author who has written a number of novels in diary form is Amanda Grange, Mr. Darcy’s Diary, Mr. Wickham’s Diary etc.

It starts a year after the marriage of Darcy and Lizzie.  Lady Catherine De Bourgh is trying to get Georgiana married off but Georgiana is not interested in any of them because she has been in love with Colonel Fitzwilliam since she was six years old. Georgiana Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam seem to be a popular pairing in Pride and Prejudice fiction.

Georgiana comes across as a likeable heroine. She is shy and dislikes confrontations although she does have spirit. She is kind as shown by the way she behaves to her cousin, Anne de Bourgh and her encouragement of Anne’s latent love affair.

I also thought that Colonel Fitzwilliam was turned into a very appealing hero and love interest. He has been wounded and is mentally scarred by his wartime experiences.

I only had a couple of niggles with the novel. The main one was Mr. Darcy only has a cameo in the story, which  I found disappointing. I would have liked to get a better feel for the relationship between them after his marriage as Jane Austen talks about it at the end of Pride and Prejudice.

As you might have guessed from the title, this novel is the first one in the series. The next one is Pemberley to Waterloo: Georgiana Darcy’s Diary, Volume 2. Georgiana Darcy’s Diary is free on Amazon, Smashwords, Barnes and Noble and iBooks.

Anna Elliot has also written Kitty Bennet’s Diary (the third in the Pride and Prejudice Chronicles series).
