Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined is by Stephanie Meyer, just in case you were wondering. I thought it might be a parody when I picked the book up or even a version of Midnight Sun, the Twilight from Edward Cullen’s point of view that famously she started writing but stopped because the first few chapters got leaked, but no. It does what it says on the tin, it is Twilight reimagined. She has taken the story and changed the gender of all the characters apart from Reneé, Bella’s mother and Charlie, Bella’s father. Stephanie Meyer rewrote it for the tenth anniversary of Twilight.
That fascinated me as my book, Pride and Prejudice: The Other Way Round is the story of Pride and Prejudice with the characters’ genders swapped. I just had to buy the novel when I read that. In her foreword Stephanie says that she hasn’t just changed the genders. “There are many more changes in the writing than were necessitated by Beau’s status as a male person,” She also says that “5% of the changes were made because Beau is a boy” and “5% of the changes were because Beau’s personality developed just slightly differently from Bella’s.” That particularly interested me because in my novel, it isn’t just the genders that are swapped, the gender roles are swapped as well. It is a matriarchal society.
I’m looking forward to seeing just how different Life and Death is from Twilight.
